From First Strides to Half Marathons: A Runner’s Tale

Dr. P. Prakash, a distinguished professor at Anna University, is also an accomplished runner who seamlessly integrates discipline and determination into every aspect of his life. With an impressive record of completing 45 half marathons, including three runs at India’s toughest Hyderabad Half Marathon and five at the scenic Pondicherry Auroville Half Marathon, his morning runs not only fuel his creativity and focus but also embody his philosophy of pushing limits and maintaining balance between mind and body. To understand how this practice influences his perspectives on health, work, and personal growth, we had the privilege of hearing his inspiring thoughts firsthand.

Could you share how you became interested in running and what inspired you to make it a part of your routine?

In 2015, during the devastating floods in Chennai, I found myself unexpectedly stepping into the world of running. A friend needed assistance driving a car to distribute food to those in need, and this experience introduced me to the Chromepet Cheetahs running group. From that moment, I embraced running, taking my first strides with determination and purpose, embodying the spirit of sportsmanship as I sought to help others while nurturing my own growth in the sport.

I’d love to hear about your running routine—what does a typical week look like for you?

I alternate between walking and running on different days. I typically walk 3 kilometers and run between 5 to 6 kilometers. On Sundays, I dedicate time for a longer run, covering distances of 10 to 13 kilometers.

What do you consider the most rewarding aspects of running, both physically and mentally?

I often say that the mind is greater than matter. Running provides me with mental relaxation and stability, allowing me to approach my daily activities with a clear mind and a joyful start to the day.

How do you manage to stay consistent with running despite other commitments or challenges?

While there are commitments and challenges in life, my running habit has made it much easier for me to overcome obstacles and fulfill those commitments with a positive attitude.

Have you encountered any obstacles along the way, and how have you worked through them?

The primary obstacles I face while running are cramps and injuries. To address these, I focus on proper hydration before my runs and make sure to stretch afterward. Additionally, getting adequate sleep is crucial for me; if I haven’t had enough rest the night before, I avoid any physical activity.

What advice would you offer to someone considering starting a running routine?

Running is a truly joyful activity! I often tell my fellow runners that a “fun run” not only strengthens us physically but also boosts our spirits. So, rise early at 5:30 AM for a 30 to 45-minute run, and you’ll begin to notice positive changes in yourself. I assure you, you’ll love it and enjoy the experience. It’s never too late to start running, so why not begin today?

Till date completed 45 half marathon which includes India toughest Hyderabad HM 3 times and 5 times Pondicherry Auroville HM.
