Westin Chennai : #DetroitStays P1

When you are cashing out a lot of money from some trip or some weekend chill off, one of the most difficult choices to make would be on how to choose a hotel ? Is it worth the price ? Well, Detroit Stays is an attempt to provide you a comprehensive review of Luxury/Mid-range hotels.

Post 1 : Westin, Chennai

First things first, it’s located at Velachery about a km from Pheonix Market City. It’s about 30-40 minute drive from the airport. It’s close to OMR – a 10 minute ride.

This hotel belongs to the premium segment of hotels. For your perspective, its about a step down from ITC Grand Chola. Rooms range from about 7000-10000 per night for basic deluxe room. Weekend rates will be lower though. You can use Club Marriott Membership to get 20% off on room rates by default, You can know more about Club Marriott here.(Link to be added soon)

This hotel screams luxury. With modern looks, it has everything that you would expect from a modern hotel. Check-in experience depends on the person who stands at the front desk, one my stays here at Westin, I have experienced one of the best to about average check-in experiences. Let’s just say its good. By default, check-in time is 3PM and check out time is 12PM, but you can request at the front desk to extend your time from 12PM check in to 3PM check out (depending on availability) for no charges. After 3 PM, room rate is 500 rupees for an hour.

The room, its one of the biggest room you would get at this price range. In my experience, its the largest room in Velachery region, and the only hotel with a bath tub. Almost all other competitors around Velachery offers rooms at about 1000 rupees less but offer poor showers and bathroom features.

Talking about bathroom, you get a bath tub as standard on all room with hand held shower and rain shower (That’s what I call it). I am particularly fan of rain showers and frankly all other competitions do not offer them ( I am taking about you HInn)

Rooms are modern, standard TV’s, mini bar, sofa etc. The bed is pretty large and comfortable.Westin says its heavenly, but frankly I could never tell the difference between beds. Lighting could have been little brighter. More images of room is attached below. Images tells you more than me.

Something that stands out to me in this hotel is the Room Service. Starting with the little monkey made from towels, to how they honour your DND’s. Other hotels sometimes don’t honour your DND especially laundry. But at Westin, if you have turned on the DND, you get a mail from house keeping executive asking you if your room needs to be cleaned or laundry needs to be picked up. It’s pretty nifty.

You see, these are little stuffs, but at this rate tiny things matter.

Coming to other features, this hotel has three restaurants. Seasonal tastes where you get your breakfast buffet, Sunset Grill – The roof top hotel, MKC ( You should visit it ). You get a gym with almost every equipment you need I guess ( I am not a gym guy) and a small swimming pool. In my opinion, the swimming pool could have been bigger. Its too shallow and can get crowded pretty soon. But again, comparing with other pools in nearby hotels, this is a great one.

Finally, the buffet – Westin has the largest menu when it comes to buffet breakfast. But that’s for another post.
