Kumarakom : Nungambakkkam #DetroitFoodSafari

Every time I travel to central Chennai, I always have trouble finding a good restaurant at reasonable price. Expecially around US embassy. I prefer to walk to most places, and there are not a lot of good restaurants at a walkable distance.

After some hunting, I did come across one, “Kumarakom” a restaurant featuring Kerala Cuisine. I was hungry, there was not a lot of  choices. It was around 2 when I visited the restaurant. First impression, not good. It took them forever to get me a menu. Not good Kumarakom.

I ordered Non. Veg. Meals and Crab Chilly Masala,  after all its Kerala, and what’s  the use of visiting Malayali Cuisine if you are not looking to eat fish or meat ey ?

You  get two sides, a appalam and a “moor milagai” ( dried chilly mixed with curd and salt). You get to choose the type okulambu you want for the rice and I went with Fish.

The rice was okay, the fish did not seem to go well with the rice. I would have preferred a much more spicier version of  it. But the Crab Masala, that is the highlight. That was one of the best tasting crab I have had for a very long time.  If you guys ever visit Kumarakom, don’t  forget the crab masala folks !

Overall,  Kumarakom is a OK restaurant. The meals wasn’t good, but the crab masala was one of the best. And considering that there are no other better restaurants in the region, I might have to visit it  again.
